Soggy Leaves

Nothing says fall more than soggy, wet leaves.  They stick to you shoes, the driveway, your car….really anywhere they can and that is everywhere.

What can be positive about wet leaves?

I have a large backyard for a city lot and I love to garden.  I have a wonderfully messy tree in my backyard that has heritage status as it is more than 300 years old – they reckon. This tree is a very greedy tree and takes every bit of nutrient, water and vitamin from the soil leaving nothing for the lawn that I have been tenaciously trying to grow and keep for many years.

The wet soggy leaves protect the clover seeds that I spread on the backyard in the fall as a proactive measure for spring.  The clover shoots are protected by the wet soggy leaves from the dog and from the harsh conditions of winter.  The wet soggy leaves are enormously beneficial to my annual lawn growing endeavour.  An exercise in futility is how my brother describes my green lawn adventures but with the positive assistance of wet soggy leaves, I will prevail.

My backyard will, someday, be full, lush and green through the positive assistance of icky, wet, soggy, slimy leaves.
