We all have a special happy dance reserved for achieving milestones in our lives. I now have one for a bitter-sweet milestone as well.
My son has finally surpassed not only his grandmother in height, but now me, his mother. To be perfectly frank, it was not that difficult as at 5’3, more than not are taller than I. However, for my son it is and will always be a memorable milestone, a great day where he is no longer the shortest person in our family. He has gone from little one to sun-blocker and he can’t be happier. For me, it will always be a bitter-sweet memory as his happiness makes me happy and I am pleased and proud to have a son who is growing strong and tall but am reminded that as his time begins, mine runs in the opposite direction.
I look forward to many more years of diminishing returns of the happy variety – being surpassed in height by other children and grandchildren but secure in the knowledge that my personality makes me 10 feet tall. I am pleased that my little mouse is now a giraffe…one who is still too young to drive on his own. That will be his next big milestone and my great big panic…..
It is the small things in life that make me happy and in this case, it is the tall things in life that power my positivity.
